I hadn't realized the lack of commitment the Seahawks had made on Geno's contract. I think this article is spot on with the current strategy. While I'm not optimistic, I'm certainly pulling for Lock. That's a far more interesting team for me to watch this year, win or lose. I very much prefer sink or swim all year with Lock than treading water for any amount of time with Geno.

I think your analysis is plausible, but anytime your predicting a psychological outcome; it gets a little murky. I think the deep ball capacity AND targets that Lock has suggests a higher upside for him, in my mind. Hope your right!

If Lock's not truly ready to start week 1, then I don't think he's ever gonna be. At this point in his career he should be ready to step up to be QB1 after a full offseason. If he's not, then his confidence isn't really the problem, and the excuses for his lack of NFL success can come to an end.

We all want you to win the job Drew. It'll make this year and next offseason so much more interesting for us fans.

Plus, the hypothetical future in which Drew Lock is a viable franchise QB is a lot more valuable to the Seahawks, no matter who they draft next year. This is a much much much more likely scenario if he's named the week 1 starter. If these guys are even close at the end of the preseason, the Hawks should make Lock the starter just for the potential added value he represents. If he's terrible then Geno can still come in and be Geno and we've lost nothing.

Clearly, Lock needs to make better decisions under the gun if he wants to start. Carroll will not accept a loose cannon throwing interceptions regularly, no matter how strong that cannon happens to be. Another really huge obstacle for Lock is learning the offense. It's completely reasonable that Smith has a leg up because he's played in this system. There's so much for a QB to learn when coming to a new team. To keep all of that in one's head and make smart choices in split seconds on the field is truly daunting.

I hope Lock can do it. It's a very good sign that he did well with Denver when he was on the field that very first year. That shows the potential is probably real.

Just coming back here to own up to being totally wrong on this!

What you get with Geno is dependability. He is a safe, solid, low established ceiling guy who won’t crap the bed from his own 10 yard line (well okay. he might take a sack, but won’t give the ball away).

So you think that Drew needs to start the season, or can he come in half way through? I know they’d want to ride the hot hand but when you lack anything of the sort, the steady one would be best. Just wondering if it’s better to sit him and go with Geno, rather than rush him out there before he’s truly ready and watch his confidence collapse like a series 2 fanbase
